Cyclists have extremely well developed aerobic systems, but without strength and mobility the musculoskeletal system will eventually begin to break down. Studies have shown that it is a combination of aerobic exercise and strength training that will have the maximum benefit for your health.

The Importance of Core Strength & Stabilizing Muscles

Having a strong core will allow you to transfer more power through the legs, as well as reduce the risk of injury, specifically low back pain. It also allows you to maintain proper posture on the bike as your muscle fatigue. Making the core muscles function as a unit with proper control is the goal of strengthening the core, not necessarily developing a six pack. You may see some physical changes, you may not, but you will feel better while riding.

The stabilizer or secondary muscle are also integral to a strength program for cyclists. As the primary cycling muscles fatigue (think quads, hamstrings, and glutes) then smaller, usually underdeveloped muscles are called on for help. The problem arises when these muscles are simply not up for the task (think adductors, hip stabilizers, and core).
